While Canadians express a sense of gratitude on November 11th, it seems to be a hollow gesture of support. If we really supported our men and women in service (and retired), we would demand that our government put the resources to support them.
Instead, there seems to be too many stories of governments refusing service, support, and aid to those that have made the decision to represent Canada around the world.
As a former soldier, I can remember reentering civilian life and having the Alberta Government threaten me with court action to recover health care premiums while serving Canada. Remember: When you are in the service of DND, all health care is provided internally.
Of course, those that know me, understand that I encouraged the Alberta Government to fulfill their threat. Needless to say, they didn't have the stomach to proceed.
My story is only a small, insignificant vignette. All the same, it just a s small demonstration of the "great" support our members and retired members receive from Canadian governments.
