An initial and preliminary assessment for the Liberal Party translates into confidence. Mr. Carney has the economic knowledge and political acumen from his time at the Bank of Canada & Bank of England to navigate the dynamics of a political order to impact economic realities.
During his time with the Canadian and British Central Banks he was able to navigate the disruptive nature of the pending economic impacts of significant financial markets and the political decisions on each country’s economy.
Although he was not in a position of political leadership, his position as Governor of the Central Bank meant that he needed to understand and maneuver within the boundaries of the political decision makers.
In the current environment of the American existential threat to Canada, his experience during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis and Brexit, ensures that he is able navigate within the disparate ebbs and flows of political decisions to balance political demands and economic realities. Moreover, he worked with the senior level political officials to choose the most effective political affiliations to create a cabinet. These qualities will assist him in positioning the political appointments in order to address the threats of American policy on Canada and the global order.
As a politician, Carney is not flamboyant, boisterous, or hyperbolic. He might even be considered dull in comparative terms. But do we need a flamboyant or dynamic politician at this time?
Instead of flashy, a pragmatic, resolute determination and knowledge might be the more useful approach. It contradicts both Poilievre and Trump. With Trump's hyperbolic rants and Poilievre mimicking the behaviour of Trump, Carney’s calm demeanour as a politician appeals to citizens and business looking for stability, sensibility, and reason. It gives them calm confidence and a sense of security. Dullness, determination, and direction might be the appeal.
